NTT DOCOMO is a mobile phone operator in Japan🗾. In 1999, NTT began to provide i-mode data transfer service, which users could exchange messages and emojis.

Emoji comes from the Japanese 絵文字[えもじ]. In 1995, NTT put a heart-representing pattern [♥] on its BP machine📟, unexpectedly, this simple emoji caused NTT's market share to rise to 40%💹. After that, NTT engineer Kurita Shigetaka designed about 200 12*12 pixel emoji images in 1999. This is the officially start of emoji and this sets of characters also opened the prelude to the global popularity of emoji🌏.

In 2012, AU KDDI announced that in order to reduce the user's discrepancies in the understanding of the same emoji when using Email and SMS, they would redesign their emojis based on NTT's emoji. At the same time, these newly designed emojis will be able to converted betwteen AU and NTT's devices. This is the reason of the similarity of AU and DOCOMO's emoji.

Between 1999 and 2013, DOCOMO released 6 versions of Emoji. In DOCOMO's contract phone📱, Android TM OS 4.3 or lower version can display DOCOMO's emoji, while the emoji set of DOCOMO and AU requires Android TM OS 4.4 or higher version to be able to display completely. At present, DOCOMO emoji has been replaced with Google's Noto Color emoji.
